These acts of economic sabotage have not only reduced government revenue but have also caused severe environmental damage and insecurity in many oil-producing communities. In Ondo State, however, notable progress has been recorded in curbing these crimes, largely due to the proactive leadership of Chief Felix Idowu Asonja, the Ondo State Coordinator of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited.

Under his watch, the fight against crude oil theft in the coastal communities of Ondo State—particularly in Ilaje and Ese-Odo Local Government Areas—has gained renewed momentum. His leadership has strengthened surveillance operations, improved collaboration with security agencies, and mobilized local communities against economic sabotage.

A Strategic Leader In The War Against Oil Theft

Chief Felix Idowu Asonja has played a pivotal role in coordinating surveillance activities across the difficult riverine terrain of Ondo State. As the state commandant of Tantita Security Services, he supervises teams responsible for monitoring pipelines, waterways, and other critical oil installations vulnerable to vandalism and illegal bunkering.

Tantita Security Services was contracted by the Federal Government to secure oil infrastructure across the Niger Delta under the leadership of High Chief (Dr.) Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, A.K.A Tompolo. Since the company expanded its operations to Ondo State, Asonja has emerged as one of the key field commanders driving enforcement operations in the region.

Through strategic intelligence gathering, constant patrols, and cooperation with federal security agencies, his command has significantly disrupted the activities of oil thieves who once operated freely along the coastal corridor.

Crushing Illegal Bunkering Networks

One of the major breakthroughs recorded under Asonja’s leadership was the discovery and destruction of a large illegal crude oil storage camp in Ilaje Local Government Area. Acting on intelligence reports, Tantita operatives led by Asonja collaborated with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps to raid the site along the Awoye–Alowe sea corridor.

During the operation, security operatives uncovered and destroyed 700 kegs containing approximately 21,000 litres of stolen crude oil, alongside wooden boats used by the syndicate for transportation. The entire illegal facility was dismantled and set ablaze to deter future criminal operations.

This decisive operation sent a strong signal to oil thieves operating in the region that the era of unchecked bunkering activities was over.

Strengthening Security Architecture In Riverine Areas

The coastal terrain of Ondo State presents significant security challenges due to its vast waterways and isolated communities. Recognizing this, Asonja has consistently strengthened operational capacity by deploying modern surveillance equipment and patrol assets.

The Ondo command of Tantita Security Services received high-powered speed boats and surveillance equipment, which significantly improved monitoring of offshore and riverine routes commonly used by oil thieves. According to Asonja, these tools have enhanced patrol efficiency and helped security teams detect illegal activities more quickly.

With improved logistics and better intelligence networks, pipeline surveillance in Ondo’s coastal communities has become far more effective.

Collaboration With Security Agencies

Another critical aspect of Asonja’s success has been his emphasis on inter-agency cooperation. Under his leadership, Tantita operatives work closely with organizations such as the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigerian Navy, and other security agencies to coordinate operations.

This collaborative approach has strengthened response capacity against oil theft syndicates and reduced the number of successful pipeline breaches across the state. Joint patrols and intelligence sharing have become vital tools in dismantling illegal bunkering networks.

Community Engagement And Local Support

Chief Asonja has also recognized that the fight against oil theft cannot be won without community participation. Many illegal bunkering activities rely on the complicity or silence of local residents.

To address this challenge, he has consistently engaged community leaders, youths, and traditional institutions to promote awareness about the dangers of oil theft and pipeline vandalism. His efforts have encouraged local residents to provide intelligence on criminal activities and support security operations.

Beyond security operations, Asonja has demonstrated commitment to community safety by donating security equipment worth over ₦10 million, including communication gadgets and solar-powered lighting tools, to security agencies in the state. This gesture strengthened operational capacity and reinforced cooperation between Tantita and government security agencies.

Economic And Environmental Benefits

The reduction of illegal bunkering and pipeline vandalism in Ondo State has yielded several benefits:
• Improved crude oil production stability
• Reduction in environmental pollution caused by illegal refining
• Protection of fishing and coastal livelihoods
• Improved safety in oil-producing communities

Stakeholders in the region have acknowledged that the improved security environment has helped restore confidence among residents and investors.

Recognition From Stakeholders

Political leaders and community stakeholders have commended the progress made in securing oil infrastructure in Ondo State. Observers have noted that illegal crude transportation routes that once plagued areas such as Okitipupa, Ilaje, and Aiyetoro have been significantly disrupted due to the intensified surveillance efforts led by Asonja and his team.

Such recognition underscores the importance of local leadership in implementing national security strategies at the grassroots level.

Conclusion

The fight against illegal crude oil bunkering and pipeline vandalism remains a critical challenge for Nigeria’s energy sector. However, the achievements recorded in Ondo State demonstrate that with strong leadership, strategic surveillance, and community collaboration, meaningful progress can be achieved.

Through decisive operations, strengthened security infrastructure, and proactive community engagement, Chief Felix Idowu Asonja has played a significant role in curbing oil theft and protecting vital national assets in Ondo State.

His work under the banner of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited continues to reinforce the broader national effort to safeguard Nigeria’s oil resources and secure the economic future of the Niger Delta region.

Signed:

Comrade Freeborn Ebimaye Abraye,

CEO.
